The new Miniature Aircraft ® SUKARA High Precise Cyclic Control HPC2 Rotor Head was developed for maximum control precision.
This technical background motivated us to develop this rotor head:
High forces are exerted on a rotor head during flight. In particular, the forces acting on the thrust bearings due to the centrifugal force of the rotor blades cause high actuating forces on the control rods of the blade holders. These actuating forces occur in particular during cyclic control inputs (e.g. when flying a loop), as the blade holders have to adjust to the positive cyclic angle of attack and the negative cyclic angle of attack with each revolution of the rotor. Each time the rotary movement is reversed, the thrust bearings come to a brief standstill. As a result, the breakaway torque of the thrust bearings must be overcome for the restart. With very small control commands (very small stick movements), the thrust bearings may not start up and the control input is therefore lost. As the spindle shaft cannot rotate in flight in conventional rotor head designs, the thrust bearings must perform this rotary movement.
The new HPC2 rotor head solves this problem. The dampers for the spindle shaft are rotatably mounted in the center piece. This means that the spindle shaft and damper can also perform a rotary movement under load in flight. With cyclical control inputs, the axial bearings no longer have to perform the rotational movement described above. This considerably reduces the actuating forces required for the blade holders and thus increases the resolution of the rotor system for cyclic control commands.
The HPC2 rotor head has a total of 10 radial bearings and 2 axial bearings. The dampers are designed as plastic bushes with an O-ring. The setup allows a wide head speed range. Other special features of the rotor head include specially shaped blade holders that prevent the rotor blades' bore sleeves from being pressed through or out and it supports the new swashplate with the Direct Swash Drive (DSD) System.
